Central Hudson Power Line Rebuild (Ulster County - September 2022 -> 2026)
|
Central Hudson has received final approval to rebuild approx. 23 miles of electric transmission lines that serve thousands of Ulster and Greene County residents and businesses.
Approval of the project by state regulators followed a comprehensive review process, public meetings and hearings, and extensive meetings with affected property owners. Reconstructing the lines will maintain electric service reliability for customers and is an important investment in the electric infrastructure serving the Mid-Hudson Valley.
Current lines were originally constructed in 1928. They are nearing the end of their useful life and they must be rebuilt. The lines will be reconstructed within the existing right-of-way in nearly all areas, with the exception of a small portion that will take a new route to avoid a large wetland (the "Vly").
Most existing lattice towers will be replaced by a streamlined and sturdy single pole made of Corten steel, which features a characteristic brown, wood-like patina.
Construction is expected to begin in September 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. [for full story, including links to maps, click here]

Temporary (Vanishing) Lighthouse Trail Art by Local Artist Rae Stang
|
While they're still in existence, you might want to take a walk on the Saugerties Lighthouse trail and look for/at the 20 tiny houses created by local artist and fun person Rae Stang. They've been installed since National Lighthouse Day (Sunday, August 7th) and are made of entirely biodegradable and native-to-the-trail plants, so visit before they vanish (which may be after the next rainfall or two)!
And thank you for supporting the efforts of our Lighthouse Conservancy, dedicated to keeping the Saugerties Lighthouse the wonderful landmark that it is!
For more information and more pictures of these wonderful houses, visit this Saugerties Scene Facebook page!

Seasoned Gives
|
A Message from Mayor Bill Murphy and Supervisor Fred Costello
We want to once again put a spotlight on the work of a local not-for-profit organization called Seasoned Gives. As their website says - "Love is their only motivation". Their mission statement: "to create lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice through education, ownership, and self sufficiency."
We got to know them during the height of the pandemic, because of the work they were doing and our past involvement with them. Working with them has been truly inspirational, fulfilling, ... and fun!
The founders -- Tamika and Martin Dunkley -- live in Saugerties and they run Seasoned Delicious Foods in Lake Katrine (along with the many other areas in which they are involved in local communitiy activities). They also will be running the 3rd Annual Caribbean Festival at Cantine Field on Saturday, August 13th.
We ask you to support them, help them out if you have the interest/time ... come have fun at the festival ... and join us in thanking them for all the good work they do. Their website -- https://www.seasonedgives.org/ -- serves as a good introduction to their organization. And if you want more information, you can take a look at this informative 5-page overview about who they are and what they do.
Thank you.
- Mayor Bill Murphy and Supervisor Fred Costello

Saugerties Teen Trevor Bodie Qualifies for USA Hockey National Development Camp
|
Congratulations to Trevor Bodie and his family. Trevor was one of 20 NY State high school hockey players selected to go to a NY State level tryout in
Syracuse, along with the other 80 best players in the state.
Various evaluators deemed him one of 7 defensemen in the State selected to
participate at the national level.
It is a tremendous honor, and the first time
anyone from Ulster County and surrounding areas has been selected.
Bodie grew up skating in programs and camps run out of the
Kiwanis Ice Arena in Saugerties, N.Y. He credits much of his success with
having the ability to skate so close to home.
Greg Chorvas and his team that keeps the Kiwanis Ice Arena operating now 10 months of the year are delighted to learn about Trevor's success, and join with the Saugerties Kiwanis Club and the rest of the community in wishing him well in the future. Trevor's parents are Shawn and Jodi Bodie.

A Friendly Reminder from Greg Chorvas (Town Parks/Buildings Superintendent)
|
|
As the weather improves week to week, the team that keeps up the Town parks (on behalf of the many folks who use and enjoy our facilities) have noticed that there are a good number of pet owners who seem to be ignoring the signs (backed up by Town of Saugerties law) that say "No Pets Allowed".
To be sure ... no dogs, nor any other animals, are permitted in the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex, including roadways within the Complex. This also applies to all Satellite Parks or other Facilities which are subject to the aforementioned Law. (If you want to read the specifics of the Law, you can get right to it by clicking here or on the "No Dogs" image.)
This
prohibition does not apply to task-trained service dogs specifically trained to aid a person with a disability.
This is a health issue and we thank everyone in advance for their cooperation. A flyer with further information about service animals is available here: https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/serviceanimals-english.pdf.

Saugerties Police Department Offers Enhanced Communication for/with Residents, with CRIMEWATCH
According to Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, CRIMEWATCH "is a way for community members to file non-emergency complaints to
the police department. It's a free cellphone app that has been introduced on the department’s Facebook page. Since its introduction, the department
has received “a number of complaints about speeding in the town in some
areas,” along with requests for a red light at the four corners
intersection of state Route 212 and Glasco Turnpike in West Saugerties.
“It’s getting the public more involved in working with the police
department to address quality-of-life issues and to address minor
infractions and minor crimes,” he said. "With CRIMEWATCH, the community participates with police in addressing crime issues and
that’s really what I like about it.”
CRIMEWATCH gives participants direct access to arrest reports and
alerts as they are released. With the app, participants can submit tips to the police, view
arrest reports and “most wanted” lists and report non-emergency
incidents such as mailbox vandalism. Reports that
don’t require an immediate police response will be monitored 24/7 by
three members of the department, he said.
How to get the app? You can download the app from the Apple App Store or from Google Play. Or on the web, you can scan the QR code (upper left) or on this page ... or visit https://crimewatch.net/us/ny/ulster/saugerties-pd

What You Need to Know about Deer Bluetongue Virus
|
The NYS DEC is warning that people in rural areas should be aware of diseases causing some ilness in some deer in our area.
The diseases are Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease virus (EHD) or bluetongue virus (BT).
EHD DOES NOT INFECT HUMANS, and generally causes mild or inapparent infections in domestic cattle and small ruminants. Dead deer do not serve as a source of infection for other animals because the virus is not longlived in dead animals.
Do not consume deer found dead. Report carcasses to DEC.
For more infomration, visit this page: http://saugerties.ny.us/content/Generic/View/649 (WARNING: That page shows graphic images of diseased deer.)
